Well, I suppose I should pick up “Goodfellas” ASAP.
What do you think of DiCaprio? What is so special about him that he has the favor of Scorsese, who directed De Nero and Day-Lewis?
Day-Lewis, for example, is unforgettable in “Gangs of NewYork”. He governs the world recreated by Scorsese. Scenes with Day-Lewis smell and feel “the era”. Yet, DiCaprio does not belong.
Everybody is saying DiCaprio’s performance in “The Departed” is “Powerful”. I am afraid it is only a competent performance in a pretty bad Scorsese film. BTW, Jack Nicholson is playing Jack Nicholson (I have not seen him playing anything else). Poor Matt Damon, he is neglected and not given much to do.

I do not discuss Age of Innocence in my book, mainly because the film was new when I was doing my research. I was determined to make a cut-off in the films I discussed in order to assure that I did not fall into the "just one more" trap of the perpetual PhD student. It would have been relevant to many of the issues I raised in relation to production design, although no more so than the films I did discuss.
Goodfellas is definitely one of those films that convinces me of Scorsese's brilliance. Unfortunately, it equally convinces me that I just don't care for his work. I have never seen a film he's directed that was anything less than compelling and original, but aside from Innocence, I have also never seen a film directed by him that I had much desire to watch again.

In case you do watch “ The departed”, please make a point to see the original “Internal Affairs”. The original is a typical Hong kong commercial movie. But I find it more effective in many ways.
Scorsese seems to lose the focus and intensity I appreciate in his “Taxi Driver”. Both “Gangs of New York” and “The Aviator” seem to have so much to say that they go on forever. I gather he might realize it himself and decides to go for small productions.
I own “Good Fellas” DVD but have not got around to see it. His style might be too rough to be my director, but I believe his better works are worth watching at least once.
