Weighty Matters

a tragi-comic monologue on issues of weight...

Duration 15m 20s

mp3 download

When it comes to weighty matters, are we desis rude, or are we just plain saying it like it is?

When we make comments to folks who are different, whether they're about weight, skin color, or looks, are we doing them a favor by sharing the unvarnished truth? If that's so, should there still be limits to how much truth is too much truth? And where do we draw the line?

These are all questions that I don't exactly answer in this podcast, but hope to generate a discussion about.

Please note: To protect privacy, I have changed the names of everyone mentioned in this podcast, except my own. (I guess I relinquished privacy the moment I decided to speak up on the net!)

Thank you, Yesha. Your compliment is sincerely reciprocated. Enjoyed your ‘Weighted’ show. Thanks also for your ‘loaded’ feedback on India in Classrooms. I certainly don’t plan to take it ‘lightly’. Not to ‘blow my trumpet’ but India in Classrooms has survived sufficient challenge so I guess that makes me quite ‘thick skinned’........ok, forgive the puns, but you get the idea. To address your suggestions about including the warts of Indian society on my show, I would like to remind you that the schools do an excellent job at that. The IC website clearly states my objectives, which are primarily to unearth and exhibit lost information about the Indian civilization that is relevant to the curriculum, before we rush to display the holes in our socks. It is interesting how Indian pride sits uneasy on the heads of Indians of all generations. Ask about Indian glory and it sticks in our throat like a chunk of raw carrot reluctant to be expelled. We simply cannot carry our culture with dignity without nervously hastening to reveal the ladders in our hoses. That is not to say, of course that the tears don’t exist. But please stay tuned and I am sure that once awareness about Indian civilization comes to par with that of better known civilizations in schools, we can revel in thrashing the pitfalls of Indian society. By the way, my next program, (POOF!) is about bridal abuse amongst educated Indians. You are most welcome to speak on that show too.

Thank you for the positive posts and emails!

hello Sonal, Leena, and friends who emailed me privately,

I'm so glad you've enjoyed this last show. I really enjoyed recording it... it's true what both Smitha and Sujatha assured me: it's much easier the second time around!

And Sonal, when do we get to hear more Gujarati shows from you, hmm? :)

Will look forward,
take care,
yesha
