This is an experimental micro-short story with two voices, each going in a different direction in time. It is both evocative and unsettling to follow. This story placed 10th out of over 7,700 entries in the Writer's Digest short short story contest, and will be published on-line in June 2006.

The coroner was wrong

Hi Sara, you are absolutely right. I based this story on my brother's suicide. He gassed himself with nitrogen. The coroner's official verdict was nitrous oxide, which was actually not very funny.

Hello! A technical point --- laughing gas is nitrous oxide (N2O), rather than just straight nitrogen. Nitrogen (N2) gas would suffocate you too, but it's not generally considered "happy gas."

I think you're right. Giving the characters names instead of naming them by relationship would have taken away some of the impact of the story.
